Hello, my name is Dallas Jones and I am a graduate of the University of Iowa. While I work I studied journalism and mass communication along with Sports and Recreational Management. Also here, I worked with recording editing anchoring and weather. My dream job would be to host my own sports talk show and I look forward to all the adventures leading up to that. Now let’s  take a look at my work.

The longest serving Representative in the Iowa house is switching his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat. In his announcement yesterday representative Andy McKean said he returned politics in 2016, he returned to a republican party that he did not recognize. Citing President Trump as a factor in that decision. McKean’s decision leaves Republicans with a 53 to 47 majority in the house with Republicans brushing it off and Democrats claiming victory. McKean has served in the legislator for nearly 30 years and said that he plans to run for reelection as a Democrat in the 2020 election.

Looking at your Tuesday evening will have a low of 43° with mostly clear skies. Moving into the night, the skies will begin to cloud up while you are cramming for those exams and it will stay cloudy to partly cloudy for the morning with your temperature right around 45°.

Looking at your moon phase for tonight will be a waning gibbous with the visibility of 82% and dropping, if you were hoping to catch the full moon, I’m afraid you were a couple days late, but not to worry. The next full moon will be coming around during the third week of May and since will be out of school hopefully have more time to catch a glimpse of that white orb up in the sky.

Now looking at your extended forecast, tomorrow will bring a nice even 70° high with a low of  46 with partly cloudy skies. Thursday is looking pretty average is well with a high of 72 and a low 46 . You’re night hours will clear things up and moving into your Friday. We will start off the weekend with a slightly cooler 67° and the low in the upper 40s. Those clear skies won’t be alone for long at the clouds come back with a vengeance and bring some showers with it. Saturday has a high in the lower 60s and the low in the 40s with a 60% chance of rain showers that rain should come down late into dinner time, but the clouds will stick  around for your Sunday with a high in the mid 60s and a little in the upper 40s.

So guys we have a pretty decent few days coming up and I tell you I know a lot of students including myself really need it.

Behind every sporting event at UI is the Athletic Facilities department. The “Crewhawks” are a group of over forty student that work in this department and help make sure all of the events run smoothly. So at the end of the year the department likes to give back and let them have a little fun. DITV reporter Dallas Jones is here with more.

A chance to play at Carver Hawkeye arena is not an opportunity many students get and the Crewhawks make sure to get the most of it.

Now after a long year of football games, wrestling meets, track meets, and basketball games. The crew gets to take their own steps on the court and play a game for themselves.

Definitely I mean this, the banquet, they are just kinda things that show that you are appreciated and that all your hard work, it pays off here.

This is not only some of the Crewhawks playing in an arena, but also all being together at one time.

Well I always know the jobs not like, you know, fun all the time, but this is the best way to make sure everyone has the team chemistry build up, they have fun.

The department also holds a banquet at the end of the year to bring the whole crew together and an opportunity to win free Iowa gear.

This is a thing from them so that they know that you know all your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

In the case of the Crewhawks, hard work truly does pay off. In Iowa City, this is Dallas Jones, DITV.

The year long wait is finally over. Iowa city audiences will see the culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe tonight. Avengers: Endgame is the follow-up to Infinity War in which Thanos secures all the infinity stones and wipes out half the universe with just a snap of his fingers. Fans are eager to see how it pans out, but are sad for the end of the marvel era and the end of some of their favorite heroes director Joe and Anthony Russo have said that this will be the final film for some avengers, saying no hero is off the table however it is as Tony Stark says “part of the journey is the end.”

Crewhawks get rewarded for a year of hard work.

Waterloo high schools uneven population sizes present different opportunities for students.

East and West are the two high schools in Waterloo and although the town is split by the Cedar river, West high has double the students of East. This could cause some complications in opportunities for each school and the district is trying to combat that. DITV reporter Dallas Jones has more with this story.

*VO*

Dr. Stephanie Mohorne is the Associate Superintendent of Waterloo Schools and has experience in both buildings throughout her over 17 years in the district.

“Of course the more students you have, the more funding you have. Because in the Iowa of Iowa you get a per-pupil coat. So when you have 1700 students we generate more dollars with those students than we do with 900 students so there are more programs that are offered at West high than there are East high because we can fill the slots of those students, those classes, so that would probably be the biggest difference.”

With opportunities being missed the district had to come up with a plan to benefit everyone.

*Stand-Up*

“It was here at the Waterloo education service center where the district proposed a plan to combine the two high schools. And to say that that message was not well received, is very much an understatement.”

*VO*

“We have lots of people that are in our community that are very endear to the high school that they graduated from. Especially east high school, there comes a lot of tradition, a lot of loyalty with that high school.”

Even though that plan did not work, the district has other ideas moving forward for the schools.

*VO*

“I think that we need to make sure we’re hosting classes, with those opportunities in both buildings. So it’s not that East kids are always traveling to West for an opportunity. Let’s host the class, we host the class where we decide to host the class and then have kids travel to that attendance center so that we can make it equitable.”

Overall it is equal opportunities for students that the district is focused on for the future, in Waterloo, this is Dallas Jones, DITV.

Intramural Basketball Uiowa

TRT 1:35

The NCAA tournament is almost here and students at the University of Iowa  that are not apart of the basketball team, still have the ability to participate in their own league through Intramural basketball. There are four leagues, two levels of mens, womens, and co-ed.

“I’m here at the entryway of the South Gym at the Iowa City fieldhouse, where all these Intramural games are being played at. The four brackets are hung up right here, each one of them are about halfway through and after spring break they will pick back. Leading all the way up to March 31st, where the A league championship game will be played in Carver Hawkeye arena.”

The Men’s A league is meant for the highest level of competition, while the Men’s B league is meant for more casual play. Many teams participate in the league as a substitute for them moving on from organized sports after high school.

“Yeah I think it’s a good substitute cause its a lot more competitive than just playing like five on five randomly. Like on set days, you actually have a specific team , you have refs, and good rotations.”

Referees are often criticized in the league even though they have a large amount of training.

“We got a remember their college students too, just trying to find a job like anybody else. So we believe that we hire staff that know the rules and are competent to ref basketball or whatever sport it is ,but at the same time it’s not like they’ve been doing this for 15 years before I come.”

At the end of the day the league is meant to just get people out and play the game many of them love and miss.

“I think intramurals is a great way for athletes to continue to play in college, even if they don’t play for the team.”

Every UI student can be apart of their own tourney team so go out there and get to it! Sign up begins in January of every year, in Iowa City, this is Dallas Jones DITV.

Council Meeting with Mazahir Salih

Iowa City councilwoman Mazahir Salih was in City hall today, talking about what the position as councilwoman means to her and diversity in politics as a whole.

“Each time I sit at this table, it makes me Really happy because, I am the change..” Salih is the first Sudanese person elected to public office in the US and takes pride in being apart of history.

When Salih first started running for council she said that almost half of the sudanese community did not even know what city council was and they had been in the community for years. After she was elected they noticed that many people that voted for her had never even voted before.

Her  message to kids who may be looking into politics is simple, “I encourage everyone to speak out, we need to see that one person is not greater than any other. No matter what we look like or what color we are..”

Mazahir Salih still has 2 years left on her term and she hopes the more she is in office, the more she will influence others and impact her community going forward. From DI TV news, This is Dallas Jones.

Eat, Sleep, Study final

Across the nation, there’s a new wave of relaxation and The University of Iowa has jumped on it.  The University has introduced sleeping pods on the fourth floor of the Seamans center, which is apart of the College of Engineering new South Annex.

There pods are located in their own secluded corner on the floor and there are three separate pods for students to use. As you can see they are very simple to use, you sit in them, press the button on the side to start and kick your feet up. They have options to listen to calming music, a hood that rotates around you to block the light, and it leans back for you to truly relax.

The pods are on other campuses such as the University of Miami and have received mix reviews, many students say they are very useful and appreciate the availability of them, while other believe they are too expensive and unnecessary.

If you wanted to try these pods for yourself they open for all UI students during the time in which the Seamans center is open. There is no special reservation that you need to make, all you have to do is find an open one and kick back.
